How to Actually “Be Yourself” in a World That Tells You Who to Be | Philadelphia, PA Boudoir Sessions

Writer: Kailee RobinsonKailee Robinson

We always hear those cliché (albeit true) sayings like, “be yourself” and “stay true to you.” But what they don’t tell us is how to actually do that.

Because let’s be real—how do you stay grounded in who you are when the world is constantly throwing new trends, viral beauty hacks, and TikTok dances in your face? When social media tells you what’s “in,” what’s “out,” and who you should be?

The good news? You don’t have to change, shrink, or fit into some impossible mold. Your uniqueness isn’t something to fix—it’s something to honor. And I’m here to help you do just that.

The Struggle to Belong

I have always felt different. From the moment I was self-aware enough to reflect, I knew I was constantly trying to fit in, mimicking the way my peers spoke, dressed, and moved—without ever fully understanding why it came so naturally to them.

Socializing felt like an equation I could never quite solve. My peers navigated conversations effortlessly while I overanalyzed every interaction, trying to mirror what felt natural to everyone else.

Maybe you relate to that feeling.

Or maybe you feel the opposite—like you blend in too much, like there’s nothing particularly special about you.

But I need you to take a second and hear me:

You are already enough.

You are already unique.

You don’t have to “find” yourself—you just have to come home to who you already are.

How to Tap Into Your True Self

So, how do you actually do that? How do you embrace who you are in a world that constantly tries to shape you into someone else?

Here are a few ways to reconnect with yourself:

1. Pay Attention to What Feels Good (and What Doesn’t)

Have you ever followed a trend or gone along with something just because you thought you should—only to realize it didn’t feel right for you?

Start noticing what genuinely makes you feel alive, at peace, or excited—and what drains, frustrates, or disconnects you from yourself. Your true self is already there; you just have to listen.

2. Stop Measuring Yourself Against Someone Else’s Timeline

Someone will always seem more successful, more confident, more ahead in life. But they aren’t you. Your journey, your growth, and your evolution are on their own timeline. Stop rushing.

3. Express Yourself—Unapologetically

Whether it’s through fashion, creativity, movement, or the way you decorate your space, self-expression is one of the easiest ways to own who you are. Don’t worry about what’s “cool” or “trendy”—if it makes you feel like you, it’s right.

4. Let Go of the Fear of Being “Too Much” or “Not Enough”

The fear of judgment keeps so many people from embracing their true selves. But the truth is, people are going to judge you no matter what—so you might as well be judged for being authentic rather than pretending.

5. Remember That No One Else Can Be You

Your thoughts, experiences, emotions, and the way you see the world are completely unique. No one else has lived your exact life, has your exact perspective, or feels things the way you do.

You are one of one. And that’s pretty damn amazing.

You Are Worthy Just As You Are

At the end of the day, being yourself isn’t about trying to find some hidden version of you—it’s about unlearning everything that told you that you weren’t already enough.

You are not too much.

You are not not enough.

You are exactly who you’re meant to be.

So take up space. Own your uniqueness. And never let the world convince you that you need to be anything other than yourself.

Because you—exactly as you are—is already something worth celebrating.
